ECOLOGICAL EVENT
“Turn off the lights”
Last month, there was an event called “Turn off the
lights” at New York City. Seven million people came to this ecological event to
convince all the people of this city to turn off the lights of their homes at
9.30 pm during twenty minutes. Some people went to talk to the factories,
others to the apartment, others to the detached houses and the rest to the
departments and offices for make the work more comfortable and faster for all
the people who was there. They explain to the people why they want to do this
event and they said that because is an ecological symbol to consume less
electricity and to make the people collaborate with the environment to pollute
less. Now the people are agree to do this all twice a year.

RECYCLING IN HONG KONG
In Hong Kong the streets are clean, but in the periphery there are big mountains of rubbish.
This city appears well care, but its three huge landfill are full and one of them can be completely full in one or two years.
Per day comes 13000 tons of rubbish to the dump (1'3 kilos per person).
Hong Kong has a crisis of rubbish according to EDP (Enterpise Products Partners). They think to make bigger the dumps and make a .
Hong Kong Recycle, an ONG, gives reusable bags for make people separate paper, plastic, metal and glasses for recycle and the ONG collect it once a week.
Hong Kong recicles half of their residues, but the mayority of the population don't care about it because they pay more atenttion to the money.

GEOGRAPHY VOCABULARY UNIT 1
Mountain range: A continuous chain of mountains.
Plateau: A flat area of land which sits at a certain altitude above sea level.
Peninsula: A large scale headland surrounded by water on three sides. A peninsula can be connected to the land by a thin stretch of land called and isthmus.
Inlet: A thin channel of water that leads inland from the sea. Inlets created by glaciations are called fjords and are usually found on mountains coastlines.
Headland: A small area of land that projects out into the sea.
Island: A piece of land completely surrounded by water. A group of related islands close together form an archipelago.
Gulf: An area of sea surrounded by land on three sides. It forms the shape of an arc. A bay is similar but generally smaller.
Oceanic ridge: An underwater mountain range that generally covers a large area and reaches high altitudes.
Oceanic trench: A long depression on the ocean floor that can be thousands of metres deep.
Abyssal plain: A flat area of the ocean floor. They are found at depths of between 3000 and 7000m.
Continental shelf: The undersea area extension of a continent that descends gradually to depths of around 400m.
Continental slope: A steep underwater area that links the continental shelf with the ocean floor.
Mountain: A large landform that is higher than the surrounding land.
Valley: A linear depression in the land. A river is V-shaped due to the action of a river running through it. Glacial valleys are U-shaped because they have been formed by a moving glacier.
